Ergonomic Positions

Many people don't realize the importance of proper ergonomic positions when using the computer. Sitting down is more hazardous to your health than you may realize. While a desk job may seem cushy and comfortable the reality is quite different. Excessive sitting can put undue pressure on the spongy discs between the vertebrae of the back. This can lead to back pain and even debilitating back injury. If that's not bad enough, the back isn't the only part of the body that can be affected by poor ergonomics.

By keying in the improper position, your fingers and wrists can become painful and strained. Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of the most common maladies to strike computer users, along with repetitive stress injury. These medical problems can be painful and prevent the sufferer from working without discomfort. Sometimes surgery is necessary for severe cases of carpal tunnel syndrome. Along with the back, fingers, hands and wrists, the legs and feet are also at risk of problems due to improper computer use.

When using your computer, there are some simple guidelines you can follow. First of all, make sure your chair is positioned at the proper height. Your feet should be flat on the floor and the keyboard should be at waist level. Arms should be comfortably extended with fingers on the home keys. Elbows should be straight and not sticking out to the sides. When typing, wrists should hover above the wrist rest and fingers should be gently curved. Strike the keys gently, as too much force can put pressure on the fingers and hands.

There are chairs that can help you maintain the proper ergonomic positions for safe computer use as well. In addition to traditional ergonomic office chairs there are ball chairs and kneeling chairs. A ball chair is a chair that comes with an exercise ball that you sit on. The ball helps you stay active while working and perform a variety of healthy desk exercises. Kneeling chairs help support the knees and keep your back straight when sitting at your computer. With the right office furniture, the right posture and regular breaks throughout the day you can avoid injury at work.
